Public School Chess Team Played in France!
The Santa Rosa French American Charter School (SRFACS) middle school chess team won their regional chess competition in November, played in a team tournament in Strasbourg France June 2026 (see the results here) and are excited to keep up the momentum.
SRFACS is part of the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad) and one of over 60 AEFE partner schools (including public charter and private schools) in North America.
The SRFACS Chess Team began in 2021 and sent teams to compete regionally the last three years. In November SRFACS sent an elementary (3rd-5th) and middle school (6th-8th) team to the AEFE North American chess tournament where the students played other teams, as well as a chess grandmaster.
Fall 2025 the middle school team placed first in the competition. The winning elementary school team was from a private school in San Diego. Last summer the SRFACS elementary team was one of only 26 elementary teams invited to play in France! After 3 days of competition, our students (grade 3 to grade 5) finished 5th overall.
This summer the middle school team was one of 29 teams playing in the tournament. Our 6th & 7th graders were up against teams with 9th graders and hours of chess training every week! We are so proud of our kids. They played against teams from all over France, La Reunion & Martinique! They placed 23 out of 29 and are excited to improve their chess skills this coming year to do even better!
Playing chess helps develop logical thinking, planning, creativity, discipline, memory, pattern recognition and kids have fun!
